Voices — You Care About Bears? What About Pigs?

Don’t tell China’s netizens the country is indifferent to animal rights. Weibo, China’s Twitter, has been abuzz about the plight of certain furry friends since the recent IPO announcement of Guizhentang, a medicinal company that, as the Shanghaiist blog writes, specializes in the “extraction of bile from Asiatic black bears raised on their private farm.” But in a heavily discussed and retweeted comment, one microblogger from Beijing (@土摩托) offered a challenge to those expressing outrage:

‘Why do you [want to] save a black bear, but not that pig on the table in front of you?’ — This is a very, very, very reasonable question, the most important issue to understand in order to understand the [Gui Zhen Tang] issue. If we cannot think through this question clearly, then we will never succeed in saving bears.

“为什么救助黑熊,而不是你餐桌上的那头猪?”—这是一个非常非常非常合理的质疑,也是此次事件最需要想明白的问题。如果不把这个问题想清楚,救助黑熊是不会成功的。
